Why Copper Pipes Burst and What to Do
Copper pipes are durable, but they’re not immune to damage. Here’s why they might burst and what to do:
Freezing Temperatures – In winter, water inside the pipe can freeze, expand, and cause the pipe to burst.
Corrosion Over Time – Older pipes can weaken due to corrosion, leading to leaks or bursts.
High Water Pressure – Consistently high water pressure strains pipes, which can lead to bursts.
If you notice a burst pipe, the first step is to shut off the water supply to prevent further leaking.
Steps to Repair a Burst Copper Pipe
Before you start, gather the necessary tools:
Pipe cutter or hacksaw
Replacement pipe section or repair clamp
Sandpaper or emery cloth
Soldering torch (if soldering)
Pipe fittings or couplings
1. Shut Off the Water Supply
Locate the main water valve and turn it off. This stops water flow and allows you to work on the pipe safely.
2. Drain the Pipe
Open any faucets connected to the pipe to drain out remaining water. This prevents water from interfering with the repair.
3. Cut Out the Damaged Section
Use a pipe cutter or hacksaw to remove the burst section. Make sure to cut about an inch on either side of the damaged area to reach solid, uncracked pipe.
4. Smooth the Edges
Use sandpaper or emery cloth to smooth and clean the edges of the cut pipe. This ensures a good seal for the new fitting.
5. Attach the Replacement Section
There are two main options for reconnecting the pipe:
Push-Fit Couplings: These fittings don’t require soldering. Simply push each end of the pipe into the coupling, and it will create a watertight seal.
Soldering: For a more permanent repair, use copper fittings and solder. Heat the pipe with a torch, apply solder around the joint, and let it cool.
6. Test the Repair
Once the repair is complete, turn the water back on and check for leaks. If you see any drips, you may need to tighten the fitting or reapply the repair.
